S01E17: Christmas Adam

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Col and Aubrey discuss white elephant parties, Christmas goodies, and other traditions in the last Christmas-themed episode of 2019.

It would not be a true holiday season without white elephant. I Love White Elephant parties. They are the best and we like to throw a good white elephant party every year. For the past I don't know, ten plus years we've thrown a white elephant party. In the early years we just throw general parties, but then as time went on, we started have themes for our white elephant parties. We had some good ones. They were costume, they were dress out. Yeah, so on the invitation we'd tell everyone, hey, you don't have to dress that, but it is strongly encouraged. So let's go through some of the themes that we've had for a few of our white elephant parties. Well, we had the first. I was just ugly sweater, which is like typical right. Yeah, everyone does ugly sweater and it's still fun. Yes, speaking of ugly sweater, I remember you wore a mock turtle neck, like a white turtle neck, with a sweater under it. was that a mock turtle neck or was it a real turtle? I don't remember. I think it was my mom's Turtleneck. I might still have it downstairs. The sleeves, it was a long sleeve, but it was like a three quarter links time. You right, awesome. Speaking of a ugly sweaters, have you noticed how retailers have taken advantage of this ugly sweater? I Have Walmart full of them right now and they're goodvientially created these really hideous ugly sweaters. It doesn't make away that that, you know, going to the thrift store and finding one that was legit ugly. Hold easy. Well, that's hard to do. You need one, but yeah, yeah, but I still think it's great. I love that they're in all of the stores. I saw a meme that's been going around online. It said it said the perfect ugly Chris Miss Sweater does not exist and then dot, dot, dot and it kind of cut off the sentence and it was a picture of an ugly Christmas sweater with Mike Tyson's face in his tattoo on his face saying Mary, Chris, myth it is it. I kind of want it. You need to get that one. That's very good, kind of amazing. Okay, so ugly sweater. Yeah, then we did. I think the next one was Canada. Right, I think so, boxing day, because we were going to be out of time for that's that's right. We did it Canada theme because it was going to be the day after Christmas because we were out of town, or too many people were out of town, and people dressed up as Canada. We had some skiers, I served Poutine, served poutine. I think I dressed as a lumberjack. We had some mounties. That was a crew showed up, which was pretty amazing. And then we did the Great Depression. Was the next year a Great Depression, and we did super kitchen. So this was the anti roaring s right the we were all wearing like overalls and barefoot. It was awesome. I think I wore overalls with no shirt. Yes, that's right. And yeah, bread and soup is what we serve. For that one, it was right one. And then the next one, I think, is when we did s prom. We might be getting him out of word. I think that s first. Oh, yeah, that's right. So the S G S and man the same two played. Yeah, we played game shows. I think we played prices right, and we'll get it to why we played game shows a little bit later. And then s prom. These problems.

Base was huge everyone. We had the big balloon arch and everyone's dressed in Texas. Churches are easier to make than I expect it. I did it Google Little Diy. It's not that hard to make a nice about at Allon arch for a picture background. Then we kind of went second sequential. So we did s then s hiphop and we had a big house party. We J A friend, djd I walked outside at one point in time to check something and I had to walk around to the outside of back my back of my house, and I could hear the roof tiles, the roof seals like shaking because Dja was playing. Dj James was playing the music so loud it was amazing. That was a really, really fun one. We had made. We got this Faux Brick Wall that we've right spray painted graffiti on. Yeah, for the back that was we still have that in our garage. Oh Nice. Yeah, we should break it out sometime. Forgot that was in there. Where what will it's not noticed that it's not on the wall, it's hiding behind this white that's upboards and realize you still have that's fun. So after s hip hop, we went biker party. Yes, and this was an outdoor party, so it was in our garage. Brought out some couches into the garage, some paint, a ping pong table, corn hole, fire pit, fun. It was fun to have. I remember how I accidentally invited those bikers from a real buck bike club. On Halloween we were trick or treating and there was a motorcycle and we we kind of wanted to have like a couple real bikes like Harley Davidson's for just kind of props in the driveway, and so I asked this because we're not real bikers, right, we don't actually have those. And so I saw one. I was like, Oh, is this your bike? Do you live close? And I told him about this party and I was like what you know, would you mind if and they're think they're in the driveway party and they were like, oh sweet, we're in, we'll be there. And they're like all bunch of guys from the chapter would come, and I'm like yeah, I'm like well, Back Down, Back Down, abort mission. So we were kind of paranoid all night long that they were going some random biker dudes showing up to the party. They did. We just had to use your VESPA scooters. Yeah, Sope's. They're mopeds. Yeah, because we don't have, for a bikes, but I worked. And was that last year? That was last year, was it? Yeah, and this you're in this year went fast. The intention was to have our Christmas party, you know, in a couple of days. Yeah, it was going to be a NASCAR party, white trash theme, White Trash theme and obviously racing, go kart racing. But there's been a little hiccup. We've postponed it. It's being pushed back a little bit. Aubrey has to go out of town for a little funeral. Yes, my grandma passed away, which I we're going to talk about her in a few minutes when I talk about Christmas Eve traditions. But she was like the best, sweetest grandma you can imagine. And Yeah, she passed away and we knew it was coming for a while. Her her health has definitely been declining and she was ninety eight. She lived, I's good's, full life. She's just the most wonderful and yeah, she passed away this week. So we'll postpone that and the gard out lad while it's going to be postponed into the new year. I'm fine with that because we ended up having a really good neighborhood white elephant party at our house just last night. It was so fun. I think we had wet ten or twelve, fourteen, I don't even know. We had...

...a lot of people over and they were good presents to fight over. So that's the thing is we a lot of people when they do the kind of bad Santa like you pick a gift and then someone can steal yours and I never liked just having my gifts. If it's something I like, I don't want to just have it stolen. So what we especially because it's so rare that a really good gift is brought to a white elephant party. Right. We don't believe in bringing junk to a why not? To be we want to be someone want people want. Yes, steal, right. That's our objective. Yeah, and so if you get something that you want, it's kind of a bummer to have someone just steal it and give you whatever they got. That was probably not something you want. Right. So we started doing games midwear. When it games, competitions, done all kinds of different ones for the s games, for it was all like precow game games, right. And then we did name that tune for the s hip hop one, right. The it was s trivia. I think for them there's been lots of different last year we did box of effact. Last night we also did box of lies from Jimmy Fallon. We've got a bunch of ran stuff here in my office and we have friends bring thing. Done that a few times. It's so that always go that way. So it works as you if you have a gift, you can defend it. Someone Challenges for your gift and if they beat you at the game, then they get your gift and you pick a new one, or if you beat them, you get to keep your gift. So it's fun because you're like, okay, I lost fair and square, you can have my gift, you don't feel so bad about it, or you can defend it and keep it. Yeah, I definitely prefer that. It makes it fun, it makes it entertaining and you know, there's some good gifts that we brought over the years. Already had this theme for a long time. She was constantly s crowdetating. Yeah, pris a crochet food scarves, food scarves. The first one I ever did was eggs and bacon and eggs and Baker scarves. Yep, and be like a big egg and then like a strip of Bacon between each egg. And then you needed donuts. I did some donuts scarves, pepperoni pizzas. A pepperoni pizza that started kind of white dish and got real narrow as I got longer. ICE CREAM SCARF, which resurfaces last night. Made a couple ice cream scarves and with are any others? Another one may have got. It was though. Yeah, yeah, that was fun. I enjoyed making the the food scarves. I haven't done that in a little while. Yeah, and we've done some other good white elephant gifts in the past. Last year for our family white elephant part in fact, we've got a lot of whitelhood parties, a family one are so fun. Yeah, they are. We did a giant Bull Pin Yada full of candy. That was highly sought after by all the children. Yeah, and then the cousin who won it let everybody share it. Yeah, they all took turns hitting it and got all the candy after you got to hit it open and that was a lot of fun. Yeah, we did some other fun ones. Oh, I remember the one will got that he loves so much was a yodeling pickle. Was At yeah, call that Yodel. I think. Think we still have that? Yeah, Oh, yeah, he still plays the bat. Every year prior to Christmas, Al Ry and I, when the kids are at school, we clean out all of the toys and we get rid of all of the old, Junkie Broken Toys. They were in multiple pieces of the...

...toys that they don't play with anymore in preparation for all the new toys that are going to come in for Christmas. And we did that last week. I saw the Yodel. Yeah, I also we gave a case of kinder eggs. That was about was good. Yeah, kids love kinder eggs Down't that's a good one. Yeah. So, yeah, that's always a fun party and everybody always brings lots of good food. That's always fun that there's good food there. There's some Christmas them foods that are really gross, like fruit cake. Do people actually eat fruit cake? I is there a difference between fruit cake and Pine upple upside down cake? Yeah, they're different. I've never had either. Seen. I don't believe our it's like a loaf. It kind of looks like a loaf of bread, but it's some kind of cake. But then it has these jellied fruit chunks in it. That's like the traditional fruit cake. I think it's kind of going the way of the Cuz not good. And then gingerbread. I don't like anything gingerbread flavored ginger, ginger cookies. You don't like Ginger snaps? No, I really love ginger snaps. Yeah, I'm curious. OF OTHER PEOPLE DO? I don't know. And eggnog. Eggnog is so gross. Like igno that I don't like. Kills me. I know that kills me. And eggnog. It's not really healthy for you. I don't think so. I've been buying the soy eggnog has. It's made from like soy milk. It's taste like bubble gum. You know, they're really so they're really good eggnogs out there that tastes like eggnog and there are other ones that are almost a little bit too sweet and the taste like bubble gum. And that's what this grows. Yeah, I can't stand it. I've tasted it. I have a good friend. Oh, she was actually on the interview and she talked about this Eggnog chugging party they do for their party. You serious? Is A fast idea. Yeah, and maybe everyone like chugs the thing. First one to finish their huge Red Solo Cup of Eggnog ry. I thought it was a whole gallon. I was I love to throw up. No, no, it's gotta be so Kat. But that's a good idea. Is a great idea. I couldn't do it, though. I then we could do I couldn't drink the EGGNOG. Maybe for one of our white elephant parties in the future we could do a food eating challenge. Well, we did. You remember the donuts? This was funny. No, I don't have so for a minute to win it. One of the Games was the first person to ate. It was on the Canada one because we had maple donuts. First one to eat rights maple bar and one of our friends was like, oh, really didn't want to eat it and he didn't like Mabel donut. You like folded it in half and just like chat like a hot dog eating contest, ate it so fast it was awesome. That's funny. Yeah, he end up winning. They were I think they were challenging for the donut scarf or maybe he met. Would have been a good challenge, if I remember. Yeah, other treats I've been pretty much everything else is delicious, like all of the you know, Fudge and peanut brittle and all the good treats, order the treats that you remember as a kid. My Mom will always, always make fudge and peanut brittle. Okay, chest miss. And did the Fudge always turn out? Oh yeah, it's always amazing. I feel like no offense to my mother, and she's a great cook. She's really good at recipes, but when she made fudge it was like every other year the fudge turned out that her peanut butter balls are so good she makes us every Christmas. Right, I think Courtney has taken up the torch. Without the peanut butter balls, it's like a chocolate covered peanut but yeah, and...

...there. And it's interesting because when my mom made them in the past she was like, Oh, these take three days to make because they have to stay in the refrigerator and cool and all this stuff. I think that was all all. I I think it didn't want you to eat you just didn't want US eating them. So, Oh, yeah, they take four of they're not ready yet. They're not ready yetious. I don't know. We'll have to ask her. Courtney's like I can make these in an hour. They're done. Anyone good to go? Good togain. ME. Other food that I remember Christmas treats as a kid my grandma made was like a sugar cookie and it had a half Marischino Mars, yeah, Marcy and Marichino Cherry at in the top of every seen the mean and chocolate cherries. Those, yeah, half half Marischino Cherry with some powdered sugar on top. I totally remember us from remember those for my past. I've had what had one in years. My mom made these really yummy peanut butter cookies that she would then put a whole Hershey kiss on them when they were warm and it would have help. Oh yeah, so good. We don't make a ton of Christmas goodies to bring to ourn because that's I think that's why my parents made them all growing ups, to deliver presents and gifts to neighbors and people that we knew. We don't do that a ton. A couple years, like I got really on the on the ball and made treats and Hannahm out to neighbors, but for the most part, like Christmas will come and go and I'm like or people will start delivering treats to us and then we regift. I gotta get on them. Oh, we totally do terrible that. He's I've never regifted a treat. That's totally gave me. Ever bring us a Christmas Goodie, there is a sixty percent chance that we will take said Christmas Goodie, repackage it and deliver it to some hole does that? I don't know about it. I have nothing to do with that. I've never regifted a gift in my life. I will relate all the blame it for every gifting. Again, all of the blame. So I was mentioning my grandma and we had the best Christmas Eve at her home, my grandma GRANDPA's in Idaho, and everyone would come, all the Anton knuckles in the cousins, which was a lot of people's. They had seven kids and she they would always do like a gift exchange. But you know, they would always eat and every tell you about this. Yeah, oyster soup, yes, and it was this Milky Sup that just had these the live, live oysters in it. No, he's like big chunky green you'd be surprised at the temperature water that oysters can live in. And it was room temperature seeing for all of us kids. We were so she would make this like fish soup for the kids, which was all which so terrible. Doesn't sound like a good replacement to oyster soup. It don't know, honey, you like the oyster soup. have some fish soup. What kind of fish is it? Whitefish, all the Everby the adults, like the DAD's and mom they they all love the oyster soup and they'd be eating. I'd like watch them eat these oysters and then fish them out and they were these big globby green things and I remember it was the first time that I was up at your parents place for Christmas with you and I we went to that party and I feel like it was almost a rite of passage for did your brothers say? Now your brothers? They were like, Oh, yeah, we love oyster soup and they like eat it because like, Oh, I'm an adult, I'm a man...

...either. We were all in that Andy, but it's like yeah, just swallow and maybe you won't feel the sand gritting in your teeth. But that was the best party. It was so fun, all of the FUN Games they would play, and I just to see everybody you know and to have everybody together. It was really fun, but it's tricky. Christmas Eve traditions are really tricky, I know for us and for people if you have both families close by, like maybe taking turns, splitting time like that can be difficult. You want to see everybody as much as possible. And Yeah, now that my family's in Idaho for Christmas and we're usually down here, we're able to spend more time with your family. Let me see my family in the summer. Well, we made a decision long ago that our kids like, we always wanted them to try to wake up in their own beds on Christmas morning. Yeah, wherever we were, we weren't going to go every other year, one year, and I know one year in Arizona, because that's just too hectic. Wherever we were, that's just where we are. And whether it's waking under their own beds or lately we've been liking the idea of maybe a destination Christmas. We've been sampling the waters for a couple of years. We did a cruise just after Christmas a couple of years ago and that was fun. It was a blast. So we went light on the Christmas a little bit heavier on the cruise. Last year we did Christmas up at my parents cabin and it was, you know, away from home, something new, different, unique and it was so much fun. We're going to do it again this year. So we're going up with my brother and his family and they went with this last year and that feels a thank because they've been to the cabins how many times that you know, it's almost like waking up in your room. I would love to get to the point, though, where we go to Hawaii or amazing the Bahamas or Christmas Zealand. I did someone was telling me that they all travel on Christmas Day because there it's less crowded on Christmas Day, but I think a few days before Christmas. Oh, I'm sure it's insane, so busy. Yeah, but we also have another Christmas Eve tradition just where we go out to Mexican food on Christmas Eve, and we did this as kids. We didn't go out, though. We would always send at home make Mexican food, or we would order to molly's from whoever makes to Mollie's, which is not us, but you order to Molly's make Mexican food and that was the big deal. Aubrey and I really hate having to clean up on Christmas even and wrap all the presents exactly. So it's really nice. Well it, you say. Well, well, well, we're burning. Well this, yes, brings all those present. Oh No, book Santa doesn't bring all the pressure the ones that we are giving her. Yeah, and got a wrap. Yeah, it's true. We don't started to cook and clean. We've started going out for Mexican food, though. I was on facebook the other day and I had a friend who asked for ideas on Christmas Eve, recipes, what to cook and what if? My other friends posted and said something about like this seafood boil and I was like, oh my gosh, that sounds those are fun. My stream brother in lawn do those sometimes. One we're expeping the problems. It takes like eight hours to do and it's yeah, and I...

...still got to wrap presents on Christmas Eve. I would rather go out. I like our tradition go out to eat Mexican food on Christmasy. Kids love it. It's Super Fun. I'll stick with that. Yeah, for sure. I have a game. You're ready, do you? Yeah, of course I do. How could? Why? Why am I surprised? By that. Is there anything else we need to talk about in this episode? Are we good? I went through my list. You got anything else? I think this is being probably it's just a couple days before Christmas, right, that we're this the Monday before Christmas. This is our Christmas Eve episode. Christmas Eve, Mary, Christmas Eve, everybody. Yeah, I didn't realize Christmas Eve was on a Monday. That's exciting. No, the twenty three is Christmas, so this is okay. It's not very Christmas, Adam, everybody, it isn't that Christmas out of the twenty three? Adam? Yeah, yeah, all right, because Adam came before eve. Debatable. Okay. So here's we're going to do for our game, right. We are going to each name every Christmas treat we can think of, taking turns. Wow, you can't pause, you can't hesitate. Right, you can't repeat anything and you can't name a variation. Like if I say fudge, you can't then say peanut butter white chocolate. Why? No, like I just gone fudges. All right. So and then if there's any pause or hesitation, boom you're out. So if you only get one or two done, or we might go for a while. Let See, I'm very curious. Okay, all right, you want to start her me. I will start with sugar cookies, peanut brettle fudge, peppermint bark, gingerbread cookies, chocolate covered pretzels. What you broke the rule. Sugar cookies, gingerbread cookies, totally different. No, no, another let's teacher say that. Did you say that in the beginning of the rules? And I miss that? Fudge. You can't say a different flavor, but da'd be like totally different. You can't every kind of all. Fudge is the sun. I'll fudge is pretty much this. Okay, we're but cook seeing the rules. One cookie, cookies, that's it. Christmas cookies. Hold on, yeah, I agree that rule about this. Let's think about this, because you've got sugar cookies, which are traditional sugar cookies with sugar sprinkled on top. gingerbread cookies are shaped like little gingerbread men in there and they look and taste completely dargering. Are you're arguing that they're different enough that they should they are such like fudge. I hear you think about like all the different kinds of cookies you can. We could be here all day naming I will name every flavor of Milano cookies that I like to eat at Christmas time. Okay, go, mint, Brussels, sugar, Mulatto cookies. None, mint, chocolate, Milano, the straw type, rolled, rolled currouettes are called Pirouette. Yeah, I have no idea. All right, so let's start over. We're saying cookies are done with, but I'm not out. No, you're not out. Okay, you didn't. You didn't understand the rules. I don't understand all these complex rules. And okay, but we can't repeat anyones...

...we've already said. Okay, and you said gingerbread cookies. I hire to allow that, all right, yes, you do know. You Go. Okay, Cherry chocolates, hello, Dolly, ball bars, orange sticks, lemon bars. Don't even try to tell me those are the same thing, because they both include bar. I'll allow it. MMM, donuts, brownies, fudge. She hadn't said it was in the instructions. said it in the dog wattle whastle. Oyster soup has to be a treat. Hey, we said treats oysters is the lead. I'm telling you this from the all those men up in Idaho may feel different that that is definitely a clarifying the rules. It has to be like a sweet sugary treat. That would be not allowed by the Diet competition I'm doing. That doesn't allow. I could totally eat oyster soup. Do you want me to go again? Replace oyster soup with a sweet sugary treat? I will replace Oyster Soup with Candy Canes. I can't think of anymore. And Dos had one and then you said oyster soup and everything flew out of my brain. That was my sins. I was so defiant about that not being a treat. My strategy. And he's mints, Hot Chocolate and marshmallows. Keep going, see how many can do. Nope, you're done. No, no, I'm getting we we got a lot of them now. Now I just want to go eat. Now. I just want some hot chocolate with and he's mints and marshmallows sound amazing. There's much does seen better than a good hot cocoa bar with lots of different options of things to put in it. Yeah, all I want, though, is mint. Even marshmallows, I can I forget the marshmallows candy cane that she's gets sweet. I want a mint hot chocolate. Otherwise you put all the stuff in it. It's just too sweet, it's just too sugary. You like your hot cocoa to taste like toothpaste. You know I hate mint flavored tat. I know, and the kids will eat something ment I'll get something, but oh, these are so good as like a were you gotta try. Tastes like toothpaste. Yeah, always you're not a fan. I'm not so you're not a fan of anything flavored mint. You're also not a fan of ginger snaps. You know what I do like? Oh, you could be flavored mint. When you're at the dentist and they say would you like this to be bubble gum or mint flavored, whatever the and I find and it's hard to believe that anyone chooses anything besides mint. So well, you like cinnamon, vanilla, bubble Gummer, robber, evil the bubble gum. But I pause and I look at them and I adjust my glasses a little bit. I say, do I look like I want bubble gum on my teeth? Come on, how many? Let's go mint. Will have to ask our friend that's a donel high genast. How many people pick something besides mint. I'd be curious time. Maybe they pick cinnamon, maybe like big Red Gum taste? Yeah, maybe. Yeah. Would you like cinnamon mint or juicy fruit? expear mint, big read or juicy fruit? Are Your choiceless? Now what was the what was the bubble gum growing up? And maybe it wasn't Bubblegum, but it was like the fruit stripe, free stripes. It's got IM gonna say big league chew. Would you like come juicy fruit, fruit stripes or double mint? I would probably...

...choose fruit stripe. I was really Yumy in the beginning and then gross, that was like juicy for juicy for it was great for like fifteen seconds, if that, and then it's like all right, this is just hard. Yeah. Well, Merry Christmas, Adam everyone. We hope you have a wonderful Christmas. Have a good one, I think. Is this the last episode that we're doing on Christmas topics? Yes, it is. Next week will be New Year's Eve in next year I'll pick some new Christmas topics to discuss. Yeah, all right, right, right, Christmas.
