Yeahthis is exciting. Do you guys want to say hello, introduce yourselves hello,I'm aback an this. Is Back we're going to start by asking youand awkwardly personal question. What I want to know is: If you had to chooseone food and that's the only thing that you could ever eat again. What wouldyou each choose why you fo connies before even had theGUESP TCIS? It would definitely be ice cream, Ka answer for her first. I love it. Yes,because that because ere discussing the possible things we like- and I knewthat wone before she even Ta Nice- knew it but our little games we have doe recipes, Iput in in the boxes, because that's kind of fun, the Lunique thing and Tunyhas some treat called crispiks crunch. That's inone of our games, ANDNING AOUNDYEAH! Now it's in our newdoming around game.Okay stuff is very addictive. It's Sadnes, sweet and salty and and tastyand it's I we als huch Ma when the friends oerotherwas I eet, at all myself, so it'Stsmin out there. That would that's what you would choosethe CRISPIC Cros O stuff. U Real healthyyeahwe didn't specify msomething that would sustain life, just what you would do like Mkes, thisreally great lesign that I really love. THAT'S RS LF! So I'm going to say thisis a sign of a really great marriage. One. You know exactly what her foodchoice would be into both of your choices were her recipes, so well done. Okay, we want not really a big cooker, but anyways Si tday e, but you make a meanless on Yau Ido make some pretty good loonyo. Okay,we're going to introduce you by making some assumptions about both of you andthen, if we're wrong, which we might be. Of course you can just correct us. Sofirst, I'm o Gos that you to met at a comicon convention that would be incorrect. I was hopingall right. How did you mean? We grew up kind of in the sate going tothe same church. She was like five and a half years younger to differentgeneration. In the same so our families were friends at when Igot old. I sill in the area and she grew up and we started dating withserves in high school when I was in my twies and so things which ca his friends andI just progressed over time- forgad actually Tok flying lessons from me. I I was airline pad for for forty yearsand and wherr. My first jobs was instructor, her dad to clessons a guyslicensed with me, and so we had kind of hung me out t them a in that pacity andthen just cam affect e Fand, family friendsand progre a one thing: the We startd outreally Goodfriendshad a lot of funtogether and so, and we had a lot of the same life schoolsand all right, I'm going to ask another one!I'm going to make another assumption about your first car GRANDPA. Back. Isee your first car was a Nova and grandma back. I'm Gonta guess yourfirst car was a dotson. Oh, my gosh, your rise, Realy Yeeayou, would think I havo dockd you online to...

...find out, but I really didn't this was way before Ir was theline.Weshe eercarthaeranyone would be hard pressd to find that information outonline. Yes, IHT long, but my first Carl was a red volkswagon bug thatwould haeliked. Yes, yethat'Syou Knowi've often thought and you don'tsee many of those volkswagon bugs on the road anymore, but I thought wowthat would be a really fun first car for our for our daughter WHO's.Fourteen Gen, a Bor for us, were for Ason like no othat's awesome. Okay, let me do onemore of these. I'm going to guess first job GRANDPA back. I think your firstjob was mowing lance and grandma beck. I think your first job was let's see here was like a car hop right. That's like one of the like onRoller Skame Roller Skare, like little fast food place where you're liketaking food out to people on Roller Skates. I really want that would havebeen so much fun because I do love to entertain people and inhem and takecare of them. My first job outside of babysitting on housekeeping my firstreal job was: I worked at the government watorpoll. I was a fileclerk, oh Interestin, interesting, okay and my first job. I family did someparttime thanks. My Dad was a school teacher. We did this in park time. Youknow clean up, put a warehouse and stuff and made this bicase. My firstreal job was. There was a private country club near my house that W at I didn't belongto anything, but I was a dishwatcher for a few years in the kitchen therenever played golf there, but I watched dishes and was a Cavagh Lil ter, achefs topper back when I was fifteen or so, and that was probably myfirst real job. I did that for fewears, Okay Gosh. I was really far off on bothof those. So at this point time, yes, we were far on right at this point intime, Wis intodright. I got one of them right, that's impressive! Well, let yougive us a little intro and before I do that, though we know of the backs fromGRANDPA backs games our family, as abre mentioned, we love playing games at theend of every podcast. We play a little game together and ell play win with youtoday, but we came across garapabaks games. We thought this is such a coolcompany that you've established that you've created getting familiestogether playing these card games as groups, and we play them with ourfriends, and we thought this should be a really fun interview. So, let's,let's give you an opportunity just to get us. Let us get to know you a littlebit better. Tell us a little bit more about yourselfs. Well, we we've been married for almost fortyyears now, Kane stars off living in the in theSeattle area, and we both like. I have ave fivebrothers. Tony has two sisters, so we very family oriented, I spent like say forty, two years as apilots just retired this year. Due to the pandemic, I was able to char alittle bit early because as they wanted to avoid laying off some of the Oeret, and so I I flew about twenty nine thousand hours flying around the NOFOM anorth America. In away mostly, we were very family focused. We spent every time conceivable activity withthe kids over the years with band and PTA and come scotting and boy scoutingand and having parties at our house to keep thekids anxiously engaged and we were very much working our whole years. You know, raising the kids and read focused on that. All of our kids are adults and marriednow between they have between two and...

...five kids. Each. We have seventeengrandkids al together, that's crand. They are all working hard and beinggood citizens and good parents and we're very honored that our kids have all wrum tobe responsible, productive adults and Theye allstriving and they're all being good parents and and that's a great lassing and we enjoyall kinds of. We did a lot of camping with the kids over the years and andadventures, and we didn' travel to exotic places. We've got the kids outto a lot of historical sites and did a lot of road trips and trips, the beachsand things we have a lot of fun times in different Kans of Campers. We had aBolksback, an bugamoan points and a popped op camper, an the the traveltrailer and just a lot of fun activities. An we live in the northowest, where ther's mountains and there's lakes, there's rivers and ocean, and so just a variety of places, ta go and explored. I feel like I know yourkids a little bit because the pirates on your skullking game ere based onthem right. Yes, the five parents are illistrations of our five kids and thenTany is the tigerist. The special card that has the woman's progative toimenor lose Hhe has that's called the woman's progative Gard. That's myfavorite card yeah! That's a good one to have save it to the end you neverknowe skoking escape or a pirate yeah. Yes, I'm the skoking which, in therigial game, was invincible, but now with the Mermaids, I'm no longer that'sright, right and technically the cracking right, Yep, yes, eahres cin esright. The crackin and the mermaids were added in the in the expansion andthe mermaids are one daughterinlaw and then our artist is the other is the other Nak the mermaids and as opeople ere fun. Afte crack is my Mothr NLAW Hfor r listeners who have not playedthe Game Skol King. We can get more into that on another episode, but gocheck it out and you'll get a good kick when you understand what the CRO yeah,if you haven't played, it definitely got to go, get it out the greatest game,it's so fun, so yeah we want. My mom is a really Nice Lady, just putting it inthere. Other orright, great disclosure there. Yes, okay, that we want to knowmore about how you guys came up with GRANDPA becks games like how did thathappen? You know how did you come up with the idea to start a business andwere there any stumbling blocks along the way? Well about I, after the two thousandand eight financial set back, a lot of the airlines weregoing bankrupt and they were cutting pensions and they were cutting. I tooka big pag out of that time about forty percent paycups, and so we we'relooking for something to add stability to our financial picture, and I tried acouple real state adventures before that. Luckily I sold them before thatcrisis, but so we had this. We learned O this gamewith face cards E, regular standard cards that had a golf theme to it thatour daughter learned- and it was a great game. But I thought youso much better if it was illustrated if they had a better mix in the cards ifit was opticalize and if it was faks Tiu scoring, and that was kind of theimpegtes to be able to take this game, we loved and make it better by havingillustrations and improved way to play, and but I mean it was really hard to getstart. We thought about this for for years. Theoretically and then we triedto work with different artists and, and everything was bad, it was hard we hada hard time getting. It started. The first pint Ron we did have an actforafter was designe was totally defective, Weha, basically trash that voll. Sorry, I know one time I called I had aquestion about skulking actually, and I called the customer service number andyou answered it was like Grandpa back here. I was like what Oh my gosh. Icould have believe you know you were answering instead of some kind ofsawesome, I'm like I love ut, that it's a small business and GRANDPA. That'show I found out that your kids are the...

...pirates. We like chatted for a fewminutes. You Probably Don' remember that Gu you answered these calls fromRandom Beatl my cellphone numbers on the bottom of the boxes, and we printedthat was so twone D, eight five housand last year with my celfwhone number onthem. So if you don't have your Nemberon Gos, that was two hundred Ivesan just in thelast year than two thousand and twenty, and then we sold other fifty thousandthrough a licenseing greent in Europe, so about three thirty thouzand alltogether last year. That's awesome! That is amazing. So take me back to sotwo thousand and eight is when you kind of ventured into this with thatgrandpabaks golf game which, by the way I had played that with facecardsgrowing up and then we bought the GRANDPA back thea monk. This is so muchbetter. Like kind of some added rules and, like you said, the illustrationson the car, the creates overmuch betteres yeah. Definitely that's whatwe said. We have that game from actuall start Ti, start selling until actually, two thousand and twelve to four years after we started the company toactually have a poduct to sell okay and after after seven years, actually aftereight years of having that game and now having sevengames, the golf game was our seventh best seller of the seven, and so wejust re released it as moming around with a lot of new twists and much moreinteresting Hart can so that game was our Foundi founding me, but now we'veretired it and made it to noming around as much better game th. The insidestory is that you know when we first imagining thisTony said. You know you really should have a different name than golf. That'sthat's not going to be a good theme is whatever A. I was lotof people, don't like es gof for famiies, but not gof enoughor goaers, and so I shouldn't follow advice ten years ago, but we eesally fixitthis year and now it's a much better game with the noming around, but sheand a artist really did great job of bringing all these eally cool, imaginative, Osoal Nomesi, the bitcher. That's how smart, because I love thatgolf game, but I play with adults. It's true. I don't know if my kids wouldlike it as much but noming around like that really pulls kids in these greatgraphics. It's just a more fun engaging game in that way. So that's so smart toreimagine it and rerelease it ind doing so! Well, tothat we doing weadded we hadi some fun Ne Spen, toit and it'sthat's done really. Well, it'spretty exciting. It was on list of one of the top twinty new games in in twothousand and twenty by a reviewer group. fesically. No, that's great! That'srightespecially! Now that thousands of games are getting released every year, thousands and thousands of them yeah Ye. We were really nive when we startedthis whole thing is lik, it's probably a good thing, because Idon't think we would have had the courage to do it if we, if we had knownthings Lo, that's a good point. A lot of entrepreneurs feel that way I feellike. If, if they really understood how much was out there, how muchcompetition how difficult it were going to be, they might not get started inthe first place. So maybe that's a good thing. You didn't know yeah. It was I'mglad o I mean I'm really glad we did it as been a fun experience in some waysand a e frustrating experience in some ways, but it's been a good journey forus to take togt together. Definitely intersting life experience not always eeasy, but an interesting one yeah. How did you decide like the second gamewhen you move from golf to another game, expanding to making the company bigger? How did that work? Wat, Cov your ass, that Om again began with some of the showing usa a FIS card game that was simillar and as soon as tonny saw. She says this isa great game and we gave me Mak plied a lot we made it thematic and that game, though some people I playedit, was really nowhere near as well known as th as the basic theme of ofthe Golf, an SBUT foranique and it's a...

...it, is very unique, play it's verysimple to play, but engaging forall ages and engaging to play many times. So it really is the perfect storm of a game that can cover abroad, demographicwhich is rheally one of our our goals and making games once that little kidscan enjoy. Parents and grantrents can all enjoy it together, because thatbrings the generations together and we love seeing th pictures of wholewiderange of ages enjoying time together. T at really makes it feel good that S.it's really interesting with cover your assets. I don't know the the originalgame or t e face card game that that's based off of, but I'm trying to thinkof what it could be. I can't even imagine playing cover your asset faceHar with normal carts. It's so much bain bad eatherwe. End. Think reallyright about all ages. We've played that with our very young kids and it's sucha great game for teaching killed kids to like to be a good sport, becausewhen you steal you know ttheir top cards, our kids would get so angry andcry and we're like okay, you know this is great. This is teaching them. I onknow we play with them and it's Ikeust Ini, no mercy. I will steal their topcards if they're not covet. If they're, not protective at this, it is true. Kids need to learnto roll with the punches a little bit to know that they can't win every time. Then there's going to be a chance to come back into get behind, and so itreally that way. It's not real as far as the values or anything may it doesthese people to cant of not be so sensitive, you know and and to not bequite so easily annoyed by things o go on their way. So what were some of the Games that youplayed with your kids growing up? You mentioned you spent a lot of time withthem. Withoutdoors camping scout sporting activities, Wbat were the someof the favorite back family games. I really loved milborne sometime. I wasa kid and even with our kids, that was a favorite and we played a lot of face, pin and Rook Games a with rookaky playlkins ofgames. We played risk quite a bit for a whileGotat band because it Gotro to emotional, but I not a way to make thework, because, if you play with four players and instead of playing to winthe whole world, if you, if you play to wit three of the four capitals and yougive yourself double armies every time, instead of so kind of ekcelrates thegame, then you can play a game about forty minutes and it's okay. Doe somedrag UNs along. So that's a good way to make Ristnot, quite so painful yeah that that was always the one that Istayed away from as a kid. I'm, the youngest of four kids and I usually gotbeat up pretty badly in the risk and monopoly categories. Yes, are you gonnatell them why that game was ban is got to a too much argument, because some ofkids would get to it. No, no! No. That is not. Why that's. I think I need thereal story. T'her go head Fe. I are playing wrest together and wedecided that at midnight the game would be finished and whoever was ahead whenokay arso it was Brunturn Ha knew. I was boing to blast about of the waterand the next tar I was gointo totally take over an o. He just he looked atthe clock and started still like ten minutes or something so he justwouldn't take a Stur Ikeno. No we're not that's amazing tsuch A. I need to go, get a drink of water I'll,be right back, that's great! No, it sounds very competitive, so obry'sfamily, very competitive, gamers in nature and they've got some greatstories about similar, not not exactly that Simi that exast story, but youknow th families, cousins, aunts, uncles leaving in the middle of thenight, because there was an argument...

...over agame. It gets intense. Ireallydear, but playing games really taught us to be a good sports and assoon as the game is over we're competitive during the game, but onceit's over you're happy for whoever one there's no angerer like does nothing but build goodrelationships for it, and I credit that to playing games so much as when wewere kid yeah. I want you to know that. I laugh aboutthat story. I just think it's really really Fu. I don't et old. I bound the game for a little while forbrantnight, but I still play Iwit thembut the oo Man Work Better Sosohave a feeling that your fan base is getting pretty big. Now, with how manygames you're selling, I'm wondering you know, are you still able to personallyrespond you're still putting yourself pane number on games or is it becomingtoo much? Well, we actually ar new we've kind ofgone through a graphical refresh on the Games. We're looking working on thatstill, but the new packaging is much more even forwad about my availability before it was just aboutof box. Now in actually says call me Eback, you like to talk to him NSO,actually putting myself out there in a bigger way, but I do get lots of callsand tax and emails over the Christmas weekend. Th four days I got my hundredand twenty text messages or more than Hatan about fifty phone calls andemails. You know that I respond to all for the Christmas weekend, which was kind of crazy, but in some peoplecall just because they want to say hig some people, some fthisures Ofe themplaying, which I love to see. Oka Call with it actual question: iloce I'L,just call n seen I'm going to actually answer the phone yeah, but occaionaly have to sleep or I'mdriving the car or or the restaurant, where I can at sor. Sometimes I cananswer I I was trying to respond. I really dotry and answer everybody's question Callin and it make it to a point.People tell me I'm crazy, O even try, but I do try to be responsive and Ireally do enjoy the chance to to Visi with people and to learn abouttheir enjoyment of the games and to to hear how they've some people tell us thy. They just have had so many fun times playn games and that just makes us feelhonors a D we're able to be a par of their of their time and because reallyit life there's so many things you do that you have to do like you have to goto work and you have to will e Tegrass and you have to cookfood an to Lonory Bun. Sometimes when you can just sit back and put allthings away and interact, t together a playa game, that's a special time, andso for us to be a part of that peak hours of time is a very big TRICPof Thi stress. I bought love Peacebll, and so it's probably one of ourfavorite parts of the hell business is having a chance to attack to differenpeople and- and I wish I'm S- could sit around thetable and play games of al O on people who call Itso the top call from the guyfrom we have friends here in Arizona who metyou at Pinterist pinner's conference here, Aut wes world, and they liketexted us immediately, because we had played grou likewe just met Grup upback. They were so impressed with how friendly you were and they were soexcited because they are like selty with you made it on your instagram, andyou like you, are you know for you're. Getting to that famous. You know level where people recognizeyou and they're so excited to run into you and take a Selfi how's that been isit you know. I know you love people, but are you getting recognized more andmore? It isn't often happening when I'm notat. I show but people. I wear this bowler hat when I'm in shows, becausethat's kind of my look and- and so people recognize me from that, but itis fun when people come up to me and say: Ah we just we, we play your gamesan Luch on. We just have this connection. You know it's just it's areally unique thing to have this...

...opportunity to t have this connectionwith people around the world and for them to really value our innvolvementin ther their time, nit's, really a unique special kind of littleopportunity to reach out people and to be connected with people which is veryunique, and I I get a phone call tother day from a guy from Kuwait and thatperson from South Africa called me and- and I just got t email theday from GangKorea had a question, and so it's it's a big world. But it'sreally interesting to make these little connections and when we make friends onpeople have shows and things it's I'm a people person. I really enjoy meetingpeople and it's jus really a special thing to be able to to be a part of people's lives in sucha weird way, but but in in Leda anbiilyaf part of those lives, that' Suc a proe way right, you're helping peoplehave these positive amazing experiences with their family. So it's great. Weare very hoder Wornot, we're not looking for it like were just normalpeopl. We don't want anybody to feel worried about us. I just want to befriends with ever ane yea and how fun it's like. I don't like it when peopleput us on any kind of pedestal things just like were normal people we like tomeet people and and talk with them and share stories and hear about theirfamilies. It's like that's that's! What's most important to us e. It makesyou feel better that that story about GRANDPA back delaying the risk gametakes you off of the feater Youre back on even playing field with ever oalright, Wer, O yeah there, you ghere, you go or t isnormal, but we try to put how to play videos on the website, so people canget the questions answered and I've had one te ont guy in New York. That'scalled me like four times in the last two days with questions about one ofthe Games, and I I've been helping him, but I wish you would watched a video, that's yeah well and yeah, the more you sell the more it's going to get to thatpoint. Where okay is there an online customer service, presience andmanaging, and maintaining that? I guess that takes me to my next length tothose videos yeah. My next question is this is very much your family business.Your kids are ar characters ind some of the Games are your kids involved inother aspects of the business right now. Yes, our youngest son and his wife Pioneer the concept and the developmentof of antiquity quest. Okay, our oldest second oldest son, is the mastermidbehind Heveour Kingdom and bars an bees, and we can hang thes a lot of work forus and helping us to do this. All the work, the last couple years ofimproving the quality of the game and the and the princing hes he's reallyhelped us to bringg. Lots of new talents and II is most of our rul rightnow, because he's really improved that which is hard to do. Reallyaente yeah,he's reallybeen helpful to that and our youngest son's wife is Dar OfficeManager. She does most of the envoicing in all the kind of office stuff that I'mnot that good at and she's much better at an she enjoys it. What I did ICAUSEI had to not because I liked it nou oldest daughter, Lani, that is theshe manages all of our facebook and instagram stuff, a d and and then allthe kids help out whetever. They can in different ways Bor those ten testing, aAmiy Os ar most activel involved a puntions where we hav them on theAyoland. But we, when we a couple years ago, we decided to make it so that all five of our kidsare five percent shareholders and bless our artist, who did most of the Otercorallthe games, she's a fire percent sharehold as well, and we put timsfolks down as well just to help them out in their whole age. So she's I gon.She him falling her. The CCKTOP OTI podcastWhi S. no, that sorry n well make sure Letsli. She doesn't bodcast much, butthen iw'll give your EMAA for Nythingbutyeah,...

...but but the kids are all excited andit's really great to be able to help them out, like our youngest daughters.Husband is in dental school and they had pretty kind of Lifar the lookingforward to having the third baby, so the profit sharing for last yearallowed them to go out and buy a decent card, an anafoo yeah. That's that'sreally cool! So with all of that. What is and you'vetalked about, potentially redesigning and upditing going through that processabout dating some of the Games, but in general what does the future look likefor? GRANDPA backs games? Wel? We've been very blessed, titstarted off with them a wishing, a prayer and e hope, and no no anythingand was at one point. It was a six figure loss before we turn the corner, but we are very productivele enjoying the growth of the games by like we do bysixty five percent last year and January. This year was up sixtfivepercent of the year before, and so we and we have new distributors andAustralia and New Zealand, UK and Games first now being done in Korean inJapanese and a lot of things coming up and it'sa big world is a big country. We have new games, we have new games in theworks so yo. We just have lots of fun of things coming up both in getting theGames. We have out more widely, but also getting adding new games. We don'tadd games until they're, absolutely ready, and so we we'le probably not add, games that rapidly, because we really have to make sure that they're perfect. We want to make sure everybody can trust that they buy oneofgraphicsGameis, going to be a winner, its not going to be any any non performers in the group. Hopefullypesure yeah. Can you give us a small snake peak about something? That's inthe works? Well, we've had the idea for quite awhile to make a game that was kind of opposite of Covyour assets and we havewoone that we'v been working on that we haven't quite got done. I that's a ave,a cool and we have a couple of the games that are in theworking stages and some other proposals. I'm getting more and more people intime who who come to me with games. They already have o yeah, know minha. They want us to Produce Oo. So far, all the Games we've made having ones thathave been originated in our family. We haven't gone outside to othercontributors. Yet al though we've had several people come to us with ideas, but we haven'tdone it yet yeah. That makes sense, because I mean it's not that easy toget started as you found out, and so I could imagine a lot of people saying. Can I just give you my idea, an Nake, a game for us. Do all the hard work forUS yeaitsit's. Much like we did a kickstarter for one game, the firstskuking game about seven years ago now, the time those three and fifty gamescompeting that same month on kickstart, we do the kicktagger yeah a half agofor a Cov, your kingdom, and there was thirty five ousand Games, I'm fixedourthe same time. There was fivezend card games that month and so that's ahundredfold increase in seven years in the number of games on kickstar which oofcomps this one place. That's, but it's is crazy, amongst all thosethousands and thousands of games that we have been able to establish any kindof traction. I'm just amazed still that we have anything going on out of allthat competition, so we're we're so blessed. It's just a really kind of acrazy thing. To imagine that we did because I had no background in anything.relives hi was an airline pod, you know, but it was something that we hadtodastii fry and and now we're having fun little experience from it. HowGreat? Yes, it is an amazing story, such an awesome success story, but I'malso not surprised, like there's a reason that we personally own so manygrandpabacks games. They are so engaging for kids and for adults, yeahand they're, just really fun all of them, and I can tell that you have beenreally smart about every game that you have put your weight behind. You knowit's not just any game that you throw...

...out there hoping it'll work, yeure allgreat games. Anybody listening out there check out these games werementioning skull. King cover your assets cover your kingdom golf. Theseare all great will golfs, I'm glad we have it now that it's not being radtdonor, Roud noming around O Goti IEM. Thank thank you both again for takingthe time to meet with us today to let us get to know you a little bit betterwou'd like to wrap this conversation up with a little game. This is going to bea trivia game about games and I'm GOINGNA. Let you take turns onanswering so first. This question is for the backs, I'm going to read adescription of a game, and you have to try to tell me what game it is. If youcan't obry has an opportunity to Steal: Oh okay, Oka, okay, so the game is, there has been amurder at the body mansion and it's up to you to find the culprit. There aresix suspects and you are one of them. Move your game piece through the roomsin secret passageways of the mansion depicted on the board game. To look fora hints. What is the name of the game like cle? That sounds like club? Iwasn't sure about the name of the Dancion, but very so is C. I was thesame thing. I'm like the body mansion. What is I think, hat's yeah. I thinkthat sounds like an adult game hot. You got it very good, okay, so this one isfor Aubry, so that's one to zero. So far, iverhes! No! This is a giant wordjumble game with endless possibilities. Players ar given a set of wooden lettertiles to begin each letter. Tyle is assigned a different point value. I'mgoing to stop there and see, if he's crab, all very good s going to be Boblat first, because you know how much I love Bodl, but then it's it is was not bock.
